Education

The District continuously implements educational activities in each individual program; however, since 2000 the District joined in a partnership with Keystone College to create the Willary Water Resource Center.  Since its inception the Center has implemented a broad spectrum of programs and activities to enhance watershed knowledge and efforts within the region.

Audiences benefiting from the Willary Water Resource Center vary widely, from early elementary students through senior citizens.  Educational programs have included two series of lake and pond management workshops, the Environmental Classroom for regional educators, the Lackawanna County Envirothon, the Water Discovery Day Camp, and many sessions within regional environmental education efforts.  The Center’s success in executing educational programs is a reflection of the cooperation and partnerships between federal, state and local government agencies, local non-profit organizations, school districts, civic groups, watershed associations, and lake associations.

The Center has been active in providing assistance and resources for regional lake and pond stakeholders, serving as a technical resource for local organizations,  and assisting in the formation of watershed associations within the Tunkhannock Creek Watershed.  As a result of working with these various partners it became evident that assistance was needed for utilizing advanced technologies in managing water resources.  The Center responded to this by providing assistance in such technologies as water quality monitoring equipment, geographic information systems, and information exchange through the Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Atlas.  To learn more about the Center, visit its website.

Envirothon

The Envirothon is an outdoor environmental competition event for high school teams of five students. The goal of the Envirothon is to help students become environmentally knowledgeable, skilled, and active citizens. Envirothon has grown from a countywide competition right here in Pennsylvania, to an international program including the U.S. and Canada. In May, eleven-five-member teams from Lackawanna County schools participate in the event along with teams from Wyoming County. Keystone College is the host for the event at the beautiful "Streamside Campus" along the Tunkhannock Creek.

The natural resource agencies of DCNR Bureau of Forestry, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, PA Fish Commission, and the PA Game Commission, Countryside Conservancy assisted in preparing the tests and outdoor exhibits for the local Envirothon.

An Envirothon resource page has been compiled, and can be accessed by following this link.
